Long-suffering Cronulla will know where their quest for a maiden NRL premiership stands after Monday's blockbuster clash with North Queensland, according to coach Shane Flanagan.

After nine straight wins and going into round 14 in the competition lead, there is a growing swell of belief in the Shire that the club's 50th season could finally be their breakthrough.

Flanagan said despite his side sitting above the premiers, he considered the Cowboys the competition benchmark and sensed an urgency in his team going into the match-up at Shark Park.
