Lachlan Coote is close the the best fullback in the competition at the moment and if he isn't in a rep jumper come Origin time the NSW selectors need their administration looked at.
This puts to bed the speculation about whether Coote would head back to Penrith or be wooed by a big money club (Roosters were in the mix).
Paul Green obviously happy with the decision:
"He's been really good for us, both last season and to start 2016," Green said. "His positional play at fullback is second-to-none and he gives us a genuine attacking option alongside our halves. I know his teammates love playing beside him and he's a pleasure to coach."(NRL.com)Further to that the re-upping of his contract solidifies the chances of the Cowboys not only going back to back. But if they keep the same core group who knows what they can do between now and 2018.
Coote's re-signing means a couple of things:
1. The Cowboy's can keep Morgan at 6. I am sure if Coote had have left next year, Morgan would need to fill the void until a young player like Mosby was ready. Unless the Cows went elsewhere? The point is it takes away a lot of admin headaches.
2. Back three combinations - With Antonio re-signing Coote and and his back two wingers can now work on a really strong, long term combination.
Finally I will leave you with this thought. There is no doubt no matter how professionally a player and his management handle contract negotiations, it will have almost certainly still been at the back of Coote's mind. Lachlan Coote is one of the best fullbacks in the NRL right now and possibly the world. And he has been doing it with all this going on. Imagine how good he might play now that his mind is clear...
