"It's going to be mayhem."

That's what co-captain Matt Scott is expecting when North Queensland land in Townsville with their maiden NRL trophy.

For 20 years the Cowboys have been itching for rugby league supremacy and it was finally delivered in the most dramatic style possible with Sunday's 17-16 golden point win over Brisbane at ANZ Stadium.

The Cowboys return to North Queensland on Monday and are expecting a raucous welcome as the NRL champions.

"It is something we have worked so hard for, for so long," Scott said.

I'm extremely proud of the squad and the character we showed tonight.

"It is going to be mayhem up there ... bring it on.

Scott was 18th man in the Cowboys first and only other grand final in 2005, a loss to Wests Tigers.

Scott said that loss had made this win even sweeter.

"It is going to be awesome for the region. We have been 20 years in the comp, we have been close before and had some highs and some lows and they have been through it all," he said.

"So to be able to take these rings back and these trophies back it is gong to be extremely satisfying.

"No doubt it is going to be pretty hectic.

Coach Paul Green led the Cowboys to the title in his second year with the club.

"It's pretty hard to put into words what it means for the team and the region," Green said.
